Cosmetology
About the Program -
Those with creative talent and the desire to help people look and feel their best will enjoy the Cosmetology program at the Coshocton County Career Center. In this program, students learn and practice personal care techniques involving the hair, skin and nails.
Students in the program learn both the handson side, as well as the business side of salon operations. In addition to textbook study and hands-on lab work, students will have the opportunity to attend trade shows, seminars and advanced product training classes to learn more about emerging products and technologies.
Primary instruction includes effective client consultation, sanitation and safety procedures, hair cutting and styling, chemical hair treatments and hair tinting/coloring. Students also study and perform manicures, spa pedicures and facials.
Related instruction includes acryllic and gel nail applications, makeup application, hair removal, braiding and hair extensions, including wigs
As a completer of the 2-year Cosmetology program at the Coshocton County Career Center, you will take the Ohio State Cosmetology Board exam at the end of your second year. If you score 75% or higher on the exam, you will earn your cosmetology license, which will allow you to work as a licensed cosmetologist in many states.
This two-part exam is given each summer. It is composed of both a written and a hands-on skills test. Students who maintain a B-average in the program usually have no difficulty passing the exam on the first attempt.
As a completer of Coshocton County Career Center’s two-year Cosmetology program, and as a licensed cosmetologist, you will have the opportunity to work in a salon or day spa in a number of possible positions.
Length of Program: 2 Years
Career Pathways: Salon Receptionist, Manicurist / Pedicurist, Product Demonstrator / Educator
Early Placement -
If, during your junior year, you have maintained an acceptable GPA and attendance record, you may qualify for an early-placement work option during your senior year.
Placed in a job through this program, you will have the chance to practice the skills you have learned during your first year of study. Depending on your ability and interest, you can participate in job shadowing or internships at area salons.. This work experience will compose a large part of your final lab grade. Not only will you receive program credit, but you will also have the opportunity to build employability skills, garner trust and a positive work reference from your employer.
Further Education -
Should you wish to further your education inthis area, as some Career Center graduates do,you will find that the time you invested in the Cosmetology program will be of great value.With further training, you can pursue a careerin salon management, product sales or relateddisciplines such as massotherapy or makeupartistry.

Associations -
As a student in the program, you will also have the chance to join and participate in SkillsUSA – the student association for several career-technical programs at the Career Center. This involvement will give you an opportunity to improve your leadership and interpersonal skills and to compete in local, regional, state and national skills contests.
